After the NIN verification deadline passed on March 31, the Federal Government instructed Telcos to suspend outgoing calls on all lines that had not linked their SIMs to NIN.
Meanwhile, many Nigerians have been barred from making phone calls because they have not followed the instructions. Around 72.77 million active telecom customers were unable to use their SIM cards to make phone calls.
Telecommunication companies have lost nearly N75.78 billion because subscribers have failed to link their National Identification Number to the Subscriber Identity Module just 23 days after the Federal Government ordered telecom companies to stop allowing defaulting customers to make outgoing calls.
Voice income is a significant source of revenue for telecom companies. In 2021, MTN earned N819.74 billion in voice revenue, while Airtel earned N397.91 billion.
According to the Nigerian Association of Telecommunications Companies, the industry’s average revenue per user in 2020 was N1,420. This equates to approximately N1,041.33 per subscriber in 22 days.
Subscribers with blocked lines can have them unblocked after linking their SIMs to their NINs, according to the announcement.

Nigeria’s favorite telecom brand, Glo has taken a bold step by creating a NIN offer to see if they can urge customers to link their lines with the NIN as soon as possible to reclaim customers and recoup losses.
