Snapchat is bringing an update later this month that would allow its users to change their usernames without having to create a new account on the platform. Let’s be clear on something, your display name is not your profile name on Snapchat, they are two different things and since the app’s creation in 2011, users have been unable to change their usernames after creating an account on the platform.
Snapchat explained, “When we first launched Snapchat in 2011, we structured our platform around accounts with unique usernames, much like email accounts at the time.”
With the new update, users can change their username on the platform however, it is worth noting that you can only change your Snapchat username once a year.
Steps on how to change your Snapchat username
- Update your Snapchat app to the latest version on Google Play Store or Apple Store.
- Launch the app and tap your Bitmoji (or profile) icon at the top-left corner to open your profile. When the profile page appears, tap the Settings gear icon at the top-right corner.
- Tap on “Username” under the “My Account” section and tap on “Change Username” to modify your current Snapchat username.
- Snapchat will now warn you that you can change your username only once a year. Tap on “Continue” to acknowledge, type your new username in the “Username” textbox, and press the “Next” button.
- Enter your password and press the “Confirm” button. When the confirmation prompt appears, press “Continue” to confirm the changes.
- And that’s it! Snapchat will show you a pop-up confirming that you have successfully changed your Snapchat username. As mentioned earlier, you will have to wait a year to change your username again.
Steps on how to change Snapchat display name

There is still a way to change your Snapchat username without waiting for a year and that is to delete your account and create a new one. Creating a new account doesn’t take much of your time and isn’t stressful, the only downside to deleting and creating a new account on the platform is that you won’t be able to transfer data from the previous account to the new one.
