How to increase RAM on Xiaomi devices

by Johnson Daniel

It has been said by a few that it is impossible to upgrade your Android RAM like PC/Laptop devices but they might be wrong. We all know RAM to mean Random Access Memory acting as a storage for holding data. If your mobile device or tablet has a small amount of RAM, you may find that it will start to slow down when you have opened and used lots of different applications at the same time. So, you need a device having large RAM to use your mobile device without having to worry about lags.

Going back to increasing RAM on your Android devices, it is very much possible to do so on Xiaomi devices, however, not all. All of this is made possible with the introduction of the ‘MIUI Memory Extension feature.’ The Memory Extension function essentially converts part of the device storage to a virtual RAM. Initially, it was limited to 1GB, but the company now allows up to 3GB of virtual RAM. It’s unclear whether that will improve the device’s performance, but it has been said to help during intensive gaming.

This feature which made its debut on the Redmi Note 10 Pro 5G, is currently available to multiple Mi, Redmi, and POCO-branded smartphones. Here is a list of devices eligible to use the MIUI Memory Extension feature:

  • All Snapdragon 888, 870, & 865 Phones (except Mi MIX Fold as it is yet to get MIUI 12.5)
  • POCO X3 GT
  • Redmi Note 10 Pro 5G
  • Redmi Note 9 5G
  • Redmi Note 9T 5G
  • Redmi 9T
  • Redmi Note 8

How to increase RAM on a Xiaomi device

  • Upgrade your phone’s MIUI version to MIUI 12.5
  • Go to the phone’s settings > Additional Settings > Memory extension > Toggle on the option and reboot your device to apply changes.

You might be wondering why you need to upgrade your MIUI version to MIUI 12.5, the reason is, the memory extension feature made its way to multiple other Xiaomi group smartphones via MIUI 12.5 beta as well as builds after appearing on the Redmi Note 10 Pro 5G smartphone.

If for any reason your device doesn’t make the list above, here is a list of devices that may get the feature in the nearest possible future:

  • Xiaomi Mi MIX 4
  • Xiaomi Mi 11 Lite NE
  • Redmi Note 10
  • Redmi Note 10S
  • Redmi Note 10 5G
  • Redmi Note 10 JE
  • Redmi 10
  • Redmi 9i
  • Redmi 9C
  • Redmi 9A
  • Redmi Note 8T
  • Redmi Note 8 2021
  • Other Unreleased Phones

More devices could get support for MIUI ‘Memory extension’ in the future. As per Kacper, devices with more than 128GB storage can extend RAM by 3GB. Whereas, the devices with 128GB and 64GB storage can extend RAM by 2GB and 1GB respectively.
