Telecos panic as Elon Musk’s Starlink Internet Service is set to launch

Elon Musk’s Starlink Internet service is set to launch in Nigeria this month, putting competitors on edge as citizens begin to pre-order routers.

Subscribers who pre-ordered the Starlink ahead of time have reported that the package is prohibitively expensive. Some claimed on social media that they had pre-ordered the package as early as August 2022 for nearly $100, but that the company demanded N267,978 during installation. According to a BusinessDay report, Starlink would offer a $43 discount to Nigerians. Customers around the world pay between $110 and $500 per month for various Mbps.

The entry of Starlink internet service in Nigeria is expected to lower the cost of internet access and improve service delivery by competitors who may lose customers to a more reliable satellite service.

The Elon Musk-owned service provider’s selling point remains speed, with satellite internet expected to reach speeds of up to 300 Mbps by 2021.

According to Ookla, a global broadband speed test platform for internet providers, the median download speeds of Starlink in the United States fell from 96.6Mbps to 62.5Mbps between the first and second quarters of 2022. During the same period, the company’s median upload speed in the US fell from 9.3Mbps to 7.2Mbps.

In addition, Ookla discovered that Starlink speeds have decreased in every country surveyed in the last year as more users sign up for the service. Currently, the company has approximately one million users worldwide.

What’s more? SpaceX, Starlink’s parent company, says it will increase the number of satellites it currently has to increase speed. It began launching Starlink satellites in 2019 and will have over 3,000 satellites in low-Earth orbit by September 2022.

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has given SpaceX permission to launch approximately 7,500 next-generation satellites for its Starlink internet network.
