WhatsApp is working on editing text messages

A feature that some may argue has been long overdue on WhatsApp appears to be making its way to the social messenger app. WhatsApp is currently working on a feature that will allow users to edit their text messages in a future app update.

The most recent beta version of WhatsApp for iPhone allows a small group of users to edit messages. The feature works similarly to what is already in the Android beta, where users can simply press a message and tap the “Edit” button.

Unlike Telegram, however, WhatsApp will limit how users can edit sent messages. Users, for example, will only have 15 minutes after a message has been sent to edit it. The method is similar to that of iMessage, which has a 15-minute time limit for editing messages.

While iMessage shows a history of edits to other users, WhatsApp only shows an “edited” label on messages that the sender has edited. In this case, the approach is more akin to Telegram. Another thing to remember is that the edit option only works for text messages, not image, video, or document captions.

There is no word on when WhatsApp intends to make this feature available to the general public. However, because the feature was only recently released to WhatsApp beta for iPhone users, the official rollout may be imminent.
